Overview
The Kedarkantha Trek, often referred to as the “Queen of Winter Treks,” is a popular and beginner-friendly adventure in the Himalayas. It sits at 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) in Uttarkhand’s Uttarkashi district, within the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. Unlike many other treks, Kedarkantha is a true summit trek. It provides stunning 360-degree views of impressive peaks like Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch from the top.
The trek starts in the charming village of Sankri, located at 6,400 feet. The trail spans about 20 kilometers over 5 to 6 days and is rated Easy to Moderate. This rating reflects its gradual ascent and well-marked path. Trekkers pass through a range of beautiful landscapes. These include dense pine and oak forests, the frozen Juda Ka Talab lake, and snowy meadows. Campsites like Juda Ka Talab and Hargaon are among the prettiest in the region.
The trek is available year-round, but it is particularly popular from December to April. During these months, it transforms into a beautiful snow-covered terrain. This makes it a fantastic option for families, solo travelers, and first-time trekkers seeking a quick and memorable experience in the Himalayas.
