The Cost of Skiing in Gulmarg,
Line by Line

₹22,499 to ₹76,999 per person for a six-day beginner course, GST included. Most people book the middle tier at ₹43,199. Flights, airport transfers, lunches and insurance sit outside that figure — and between the tiers, only the hotel changes.

Ask what a ski week in Gulmarg costs and you get a headline figure or a shrug. Both answers are honest. Neither one tells you what leaves your account, because the published number is a boundary and the spending carries on past it.

How the price usually gets answered
Commonly published

All inclusive, from ₹22,499 per person.

Commonly published

It depends on your budget and how you travel.

The first is our own price and it is accurate. It is also not the total. A package price tells you where the package stops, and almost nobody publishes what waits on the other side of that line.

01 Inside the price

What the cost of skiing in Gulmarg covers

The short version

Seven things. Ski gear, a certified instructor at every session, unlimited lift passes, your hotel, breakfast and dinner daily, the Phase 1 gondola ticket, and GST. The gondola matters more than it looks — that ticket is what puts you on the mountain for your final run.

The seven, one at a time

Ski gear

Skis, boots, poles, helmet and safety kit, fitted on arrival. You bring your own clothing.

Instruction

A certified instructor at every session, capped at three students. Not a guide who skis ahead of you.

Lift passes

Unlimited lift access. For a beginner week that means the drag lifts at the base, every day.

Accommodation

Five tiers, from a hut stay to a signature hotel. The tier is the only thing that moves the price.

Two meals daily

Breakfast and dinner. Lunch is on you, and it is the one meal people forget to budget.

Phase 1 gondola

The day-six ticket. Bought separately it runs about ₹700 to ₹810 per person, most often quoted at ₹800.

GST

Already in the number. Not added at checkout, and not a line on your final invoice.

Every tier carries all seven. Gondola rate is the published Phase 1 range for the 2026–27 season.

Why the gondola ticket is not decoration

Day six is the run you came for. You ride the first phase of the gondola and ski back down, and the ticket in the package is what makes that possible.

Priced separately it is a small sum against the course fee. Left out, it is the difference between finishing on the mountain and finishing on the nursery slope. The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation publishes the current tariff, and it is the only authority worth checking.

What the week builds towards is set out day by day in our six-day beginner ski course in Gulmarg.

GST is in the number, not added later

Indian tour operators pay five per cent where they forgo input tax credit, and eighteen per cent where they claim it. Both are legitimate, and both are set out by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs under heading 9985. Neither is always visible on a quote.

The practical point for you is a question to ask, not a rate to memorise. Does the figure on the page already contain the tax? Ours does. A price that does not can move by a fifth between the quote and the invoice.

02 Outside the price

What the price does not cover

The short version

Five things sit outside every tier: airfare, airport transfers, other snow activities, photo and video, and personal expenses. Two of those cost real money. One you cannot avoid. Two are genuinely optional. Lunch is the line most budgets miss.

The complete list of what sits outside the fee

All five tiers

Airfare

Flights to and from Srinagar are yours to book. Fares move week to week, so no honest page can publish a figure.

Costs real money

Airport transfers

Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km. One way runs roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 by sedan and ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 by SUV. Budget for both directions.

Costs real money

Personal expenses, and lunch

Beverages, room service, anything from a shop. Lunch belongs here rather than in a list of extras, because you will eat it every day.

You cannot avoid it

Other snow activities

Sledding, ice skating and the rest are charged separately. None of them forms part of learning to ski.

Genuinely optional

Photo and video

Personal media coverage is a separate booking, not a bundled extra.

Genuinely optional
Travel insurance is not on this list because we do not sell it. It is still worth having, and worth choosing a policy that covers skiing rather than one that quietly does not.

Taken from the published inclusions and exclusions for the 2026–27 season. Fares are market ranges, not quotes.

In winter the transfer is two journeys, not one

Every cost page treats the airport transfer as a single number. Between January and March it is two, and the second one catches people out at the barrier.

Between January and March the road beyond Tangmarg is under a standing order: only vehicles with four-wheel drive or anti-skid chains are allowed through. Unchained taxis get stopped at the barrier, about 13 km short of Gulmarg.

Most Srinagar taxis carry no chains, so in practice you change vehicles at Tangmarg and pay a local chained cab for the last leg. Reported union rates are around ₹1,500 one way, or ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 for both directions.

Tangmarg is the interchange even outside winter. The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Tourism describes the route from Srinagar as running to Tangmarg, with a separate onward service covering the last leg to Gulmarg. Snow simply makes that change compulsory rather than optional.

Where most taxis stop

Only 4×4 or chain-fitted vehicles are allowed beyond this point under a standing order. Most Srinagar taxis carry no chains, so you change to a local chained cab — a separate vehicle and a separate payment. ₹1,500 one way · ₹2,500 – ₹3,000 return Reported union rates. Agree it in Srinagar, not at the barrier

Gulmarg

Leg two · the last 13 km

Then double the whole thing, because you have to get back to the airport as well.

Srinagar to Gulmarg is commonly given as 50 to 51 km by road, with the Tangmarg–Gulmarg stretch reported at 12 to 15 km. Fares are market ranges, not quotes. Outside January to March a single taxi usually completes the run.

Why this list is here at all

Publishing exclusions costs a booking now and again. Somebody reads the second leg of that transfer and decides the week is more than they wanted to spend.

The alternative is worse. A guest who discovers the Tangmarg change at the barrier has already decided what they think of us, and no amount of good coaching afterwards undoes it.

That is the complete list. If another operator's page carries no such list, that is not because their package includes more.

03 Worked through

A full week in Gulmarg, worked through

The short version

Take the middle tier at ₹43,199, add transfers both ways, six lunches and insurance, and you land between ₹51,100 and ₹57,500 before flights. Flights are the variable that decides whether the week costs fifty thousand or seventy.

Course fees are our published tier prices. Extras are the same ₹7,900 to ₹14,300 band on every tier, and exclude the chained cab a January to March arrival needs beyond Tangmarg.

Swap the tier and the whole total moves

The extras stay roughly the same whichever tier you book. Transfers, lunches and insurance land between ₹7,900 and ₹14,300 on any of them.

What moves is the course fee. Basic lands between ₹30,400 and ₹36,800 before flights. Platinum lands between ₹84,900 and ₹91,300. The chart above is that same arithmetic run across all five.

Every figure here is per person

Two people travelling together share a room but pay two course fees. The transfer is the only line that genuinely halves.

A couple on the middle tier should plan on roughly ₹97,000 to ₹107,000 before flights, not ₹50,000. It is the easiest number on this page to misread, and the most expensive one to misread on the day.

That is the cost of skiing in Gulmarg for one person on the middle tier, and nothing in it becomes a surprise later. This is the part of a cost page operators usually save for the booking call.

Our six-day beginner ski course sets all of it out before you book, not after.

04 The honest part

Doing it yourself, and when that lowers the cost of skiing in Gulmarg

The short version

Arranging it yourself is cheaper on paper. A ski set rents for ₹500 to ₹2,500 a day, a drag-lift pass ₹200 to ₹500, and a private instructor ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. Six days of that plus a hotel is a real alternative, and for some people it is the right one.

What the pieces cost separately at Gulmarg

Per person

Item Reported range
Ski setSkis, boots and poles ₹500 – ₹2,500 a day
Jacket and trousers Around ₹600 a day
Helmet and goggles ₹200 – ₹500 a day
Drag-lift passThe beginner lifts at the base ₹200 – ₹500 a day
Instructor, group session Around ₹1,000
Instructor, private ₹2,000 – ₹4,000 a day
Gondola, Phase 1 ₹700 – ₹810
These are reported market ranges, not quotes. They move with the season, the shop and the day, and none of them includes a hotel.

We have not multiplied these by six for you. What you would actually pay depends on whether you end up in a group or one to one, which is the point of the next paragraph.

What a day rate does not buy

That arithmetic works if you are happy organising a week in a mountain village in winter. It also assumes you will take instruction from whoever is free that morning.

What you give up is the ratio and the sequence. A day rate buys you an instructor, not a curriculum. Whether you get three to a group or ten gets decided at the meeting point.

And a technique you miss on Tuesday does not come back on Wednesday from someone who was not there.

The government option

The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering has taught at Gulmarg since 1968. The Ministry of Tourism started it that year as the Gulmarg Winter Sports Project, and it later became a permanent institute.

IISM runs beginner courses with lodging included and its intake is limited. Fees are worth checking on the institute's own site, because the figures circulating on travel forums are years out of date.

If your priority is the lowest price for structured instruction, start there rather than with us.

Where we actually sit

Our Gulmarg beginner ski course is the middle path: fixed ratio, fixed progression, one price.

It is not the cheapest way to stand on skis in Gulmarg, and it does not claim to be.

05 The tiers

What changes between the five tiers

The short version

Only the hotel. The instruction, the ratio, the gear, the lift passes, the gondola ticket and the meals stay identical from ₹22,499 to ₹76,999. A cheaper tier buys a cheaper bed, not a thinner course.

Identical on every tier
  • Certified instruction, every session
  • Three students per instructor
  • Skis, boots, poles and safety kit
  • Unlimited lift passes
  • The Phase 1 gondola ticket
  • Breakfast and dinner daily
Changes with the tier
  • Where you sleep

That is the whole list. Six things fixed, one thing variable, and the price follows the one.

Tier prices are our published 2026–27 rates, all per person and inclusive of GST.

The five, and where each one puts you

Basic Hotel Zam Zam, hut stay ₹22,499
Silver Roseland Cottage, Gulmarg Inn, Ski Lodge, Poshwan ₹31,990
Gold Hotel Welcome, Hotel Affarwat, Hotel Poshwan ₹43,199
Diamond Hotel Zagheer, Hotel Lupin, Hotel Meadows ₹57,499
Platinum Vintage Grand Mumtaz, Royal Castle, Hotel Hilltop ₹76,999

Basic is a hut stay. Platinum is the Grand Mumtaz. Everything between is a question of how you want to sleep and how far you want to walk in the morning.

Snow piled around the entrance of the Gold tier hotel in Gulmarg, the most-booked accommodation on the course
Hotel Welcome, on the Gold tier. Heated rooms, hot water and a short walk to the lifts.

What the middle tier actually buys

Concretely: a heated room, hot water, a mountain view and a short walk to the lifts.

None of that sounds like much on a booking page. A cold room after six hours on snow turns a good week into an endured one, and that is a different holiday from the one you paid for.

The walk matters more than people expect

Ski boots are unpleasant to walk in. Rigid, heavy, and designed for a binding rather than a pavement.

So a hotel ten minutes further out costs you twenty minutes a day in them, for no return. Over six days that is two hours of the week spent walking in the least comfortable footwear you will ever own.

Book the tier you want to sleep in, not the tier you think buys better teaching. It does not.

06 Questions

Questions about the cost of skiing in Gulmarg

Is the gondola ticket really included?

Phase 1, yes — the stage you ride on day six before skiing the run back down.

Phase 2 climbs to 3,980 metres on a shoulder of Apharwat Peak, whose summit is higher again — published figures put it between 4,200 and 4,390 metres. That is expert terrain and no part of a beginner week. As a sightseer you would pay roughly ₹900 to ₹1,000 for it. Fares change, so confirm on the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation portal, which is the only authority on the day.

Why is lunch not included when breakfast and dinner are?

Because you are on the mountain at lunchtime and the group is not always in one place. Budget ₹400 to ₹800 a day. Almost every ski budget forgets it, which is why it sits in the table above rather than in a footnote.

Do I need to pay extra for a helmet or safety gear?

No. Helmets and safety kit come with the gear, and every helmet gets fitted before anyone steps onto snow.

You bring clothing: thermal base layers, a waterproof shell, warm gloves, sunscreen, and UV-rated goggles or sunglasses.

Does the cost of skiing in Gulmarg change with the season?

Our five tier prices hold across every departure from December to March.

Independent booking behaves differently. Rental shops and hotels in Gulmarg raise their rates through the Christmas and New Year weeks, and gondola slots get scarce. If you are arranging your own week rather than booking a course, those two weeks are the expensive ones.

Is Gulmarg more expensive than Auli?

Course fees are not the deciding number. The transfer is.

Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km. Dehradun to Auli is roughly 250 km, so that transfer costs several times more before anyone has stood on a ski. We set the two side by side in our comparison of Gulmarg and Auli.
