Gulmarg or Auli:
Which Is Better for Learning to Ski?

Both. Auli is cheaper to reach and simpler to organise. Gulmarg has roughly eight times the marked terrain, and an airport transfer of two to three and a half hours against eight to eleven hours of mountain road. Your travel dates usually decide it.

How the comparison usually gets made
Commonly written

Gulmarg is for serious skiers. Auli is where you start.

Commonly written

Auli is the accessible one. Gulmarg is the real one.

Both are fair, and neither books a trip. What actually decides it is when you can travel, and how much of that week you are willing to spend on the road.

01 Getting there

Getting there is the biggest practical difference between them

The short version

Srinagar airport to Gulmarg is roughly 50 km — an hour and a half to two hours, or up to three and a half after heavy snow. Jolly Grant at Dehradun to Auli is roughly 290 km and eight to eleven hours. Gulmarg's transfer is a morning. Auli's is a full day.

Srinagar → Gulmarg
50km
1.5 – 2 hours

One airport transfer, mostly across flat valley floor. You can land in the morning and be in Gulmarg for lunch. After heavy snow, chains or a 4×4 are required from Tangmarg and it can run to three and a half.

Dehradun → Auli
290km
8 – 11 hours

A full day on mountain highway up the Alaknanda valley. Land after mid-morning and you will not arrive in daylight.

Distances are published road distances from each destination's nearest airport. Figures for Auli range from 273 to 305 km depending on route.

Srinagar to Gulmarg — 50 km, and the last 13 are the ones that count

Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport sits about 50 km from Gulmarg, with direct flights from Delhi and seasonal connections from other Indian cities. The road runs out through Narbal and Magam to Tangmarg, and the first 35 km cross flat valley floor.

The climb starts at Tangmarg. The road switchbacks from around 1,800 metres there to 2,650 metres at Gulmarg village, and that final stretch is where the time goes. In clear weather the whole transfer takes 90 minutes to two hours.

Winter changes the arithmetic. After fresh snow, vehicles are held at Tangmarg until they have chains or four-wheel drive, and the transfer runs two and a half to three and a half hours while the climb is cleared. The distance is fixed. The clearing time is not, which is why our six-day beginner ski course in Gulmarg treats arrival as its own day rather than pairing it with a first session. Airport transfers sit outside the course price, as they do at either destination.

The last thirteen kilometres. In clear weather it takes twenty minutes.

Dehradun to Auli — around 290 km of mountain highway

Auli's nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun. Published road distances run from roughly 273 to 305 km depending on the route taken, and eight to eleven hours is the consistent estimate.

The road follows NH-7 up the Alaknanda valley, through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag to Jyotirmath — the town most people still call Joshimath, officially renamed in 2024. Auli sits 10 to 14 km above it. The nearest railheads are Rishikesh at about 250 km and Haridwar at about 280.

Land at Dehradun at midday and you will not reach Auli in daylight. Itineraries either leave Dehradun before dawn or break the drive at Rudraprayag or Karnaprayag. Driving from Delhi instead is roughly 490 km and 12 to 16 hours.

The ropeway, and why it matters to your arrival day

That last uphill stretch used to have a shortcut. The 4.15 km Joshimath–Auli cable car, operated by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, climbed about 1,110 metres in roughly 25 minutes.

Business Standard reported that the service was suspended in January 2023, after cracks appeared near the first tower during the Joshimath land subsidence. A technical survey found damage across the towers and recommended rebuilding them on a fresh alignment. A detailed project report worth around ₹480 crore has since been submitted for a replacement gondola, to be built in two stages.

Check the current position before you book. It decides whether your arrival is a cable car ride or another hour of switchbacks, and reports on the ropeway's status have not been consistent.

Neither destination is hard to reach. One of them is slow to reach. Gulmarg costs you an afternoon at each end of the trip. Auli costs you a day at each end, and on a six-day course that is two days of your holiday.

02 The snow

The snow, and how long each season lasts

The short version

Auli's slopes top out around 3,049 metres. Gulmarg's reach 3,980 metres and sit about 390 km further north. That gap is why Auli's reliable window runs roughly January to March while Gulmarg holds December to March. Neither is guaranteed, and both have lost seasons since 2023.

Elevations as published by the resorts and by the Chamoli district administration. Gulmarg's figure is the top gondola station; Auli's is the top of its ski area.

Altitude and latitude set the window

The Chamoli district administration's own tourism listing describes Auli's slopes as usually carrying about three metres of snow from January to March. That is the honest window. December at Auli is a gamble, and by late March the lower fields are going.

Gulmarg starts higher and finishes higher. Its village sits at 2,650 metres, which is above the bottom of Auli's ski area at 2,519 metres. Gulmarg also sits at about 34°N against Auli's 30.5°N.

Neither difference is dramatic on its own. Together they buy Gulmarg roughly an extra month at the front of the season, and a little more at the back.

A good season. Both resorts have had winters that looked nothing like this.

The same weather system feeds both, and it has been failing

Winter snow across the Indian Himalaya arrives on western disturbances, extra-tropical storms that form over the Mediterranean and track east. When they do not come, nothing else makes up the shortfall.

When there's no weather system, how can there be [snow].

R.K. Jenamani · Senior Scientist, India Meteorological Department

Auli has lost events repeatedly. Ajay Bhatt, General Secretary of the Winter Games Federation of India, confirmed the postponement of the national alpine championship scheduled for late February 2023, because there was not enough snow on the Nanda Devi slope. An FIS-graded international race set for the same month was cancelled outright.

A snow gun imported from Germany around 2009–10, ahead of the 2011 South Asian Winter Games, has never produced usable snow. Auli has no working artificial cover to fall back on.

Gulmarg has not been spared either. The Kashmir Valley ended December 2023 with a precipitation deficit of roughly 80%, and the following month both the Associated Press and CNN reported from Gulmarg on bare slopes, with photographs of tourists standing on grass where the beginner runs should have been.

The pattern repeated the following winter. January and February 2025 ran a deficit of roughly 80%, the Khelo India Winter Games were postponed a second year running, and the Travel Agents Association of Kashmir reported around half of Gulmarg's bookings cancelled.

Gulmarg's advantage is margin, not immunity. When a storm does arrive, snow settles and stays at 3,980 metres in conditions where 3,049 metres turns to slush. Neither destination can promise you a season, and anyone who does is selling something.

Check your dates

Which month can you actually travel?

The season is what decides this, more than the terrain does. Pick the month you can get away and see where each resort stands.

03 Lifts and terrain

Lifts and terrain: Gulmarg's 25 km against Auli's 3

The short version

Gulmarg has around 25 km of marked slopes, six lifts and 1,330 metres of vertical. Auli has about 3 km of slope, three lifts and roughly 500 metres of drop. For your first week the difference barely registers. It decides everything about your second trip.

Gulmarg carries roughly eight times the marked terrain. For your first week, almost none of it matters.

What a beginner actually uses

None of those rows describes your first week. At Gulmarg you spend it on the drag lifts behind the hotel strip, on slopes that barely tilt.

That end of the mountain is being actively built on. On 13 December 2025, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah opened a 726-metre drag lift at Kongdoori — described by officials as Asia's longest — built at a cost of ₹3.65 crore. It came as part of a set of tourism projects worth over ₹17 crore, executed by the Gulmarg Development Authority and the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, and the same day brought an Integrated Skiing Training and Adventure Tourism Centre and a set of ski training courses with it. The older base lifts were tendered separately in 2026 for a control and safety upgrade. Gulmarg is adding beginner infrastructure, not just maintaining it.

At Auli you use the chairlift and the poma serving the lower fields. Auli's ski area is small enough to be worked consistently, where Gulmarg leaves the greater part of its mountain as it falls and grooms only a limited number of runs.

That consistency is a real point in Auli's favour. Predictable snow under a beginner's skis is worth more than terrain they will never touch.

What you use in your second year

Gulmarg's first gondola stage climbs to Kongdoori at about 3,090 metres, and the run back down drops through the treeline to the village. That is where our six-day course finishes on its final day.

The second stage of the Gulmarg Gondola continues to 3,980 metres on the shoulder of Apharwat. That terrain is expert-only, off-piste, and no part of any beginner week.

Auli's headline run is the Nanda Devi slope, FIS-graded and used for national championships, with its 500-metre drop over about 3 km. It is a proper race slope. It is also, more or less, the whole mountain.

If you intend to ski once and never again, that distinction is academic. If you suspect you will keep going, Gulmarg has somewhere for you to go next.

04 The cost

What a week at Gulmarg or Auli actually costs

The short version

Lift tariffs at both are close enough to ignore. The gap is the journey. A one-way Dehradun–Auli taxi runs roughly ₹9,000 to ₹11,000; Srinagar–Gulmarg is about ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. Add flights and Auli is usually cheaper from Delhi, and dearer from most other cities.

Gondola fares are the range reported by booking sources for the 2026 season and are not official figures — confirm on the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation portal, which is the only authority on the day. Rides are slot-booked in advance, and the gondola closes on the second and fourth Monday of each month for maintenance. The Auli cable car figure was recorded before that service was suspended. Taxi ranges come from 2025–26 travel sources and vary by vehicle and season.

Two of those rows are not costs if you book a course. Lift passes and the Phase 1 gondola ticket are inside the Olixora price. The airport transfer is not, and neither are flights — those you pay either way.

Flights are excluded, because they move too much to publish. Everything above is a cost you meet after you land.

Lift tariffs barely separate them

Lift tariffs are close enough to ignore. Both resorts charge separately for each stage, and the difference between them will not decide anybody's holiday.

Gulmarg's gondola is slot-booked in advance rather than sold at a window, so build it into your plan before you arrive. Turning up expecting to buy a ticket on the day is how people end up missing it.

The transfer is where the money moves

The transfer is where the money actually moves. Delhi to Dehradun is roughly a 50-minute flight, and the shorter hop is usually the cheaper ticket. The ₹9,000-plus taxi waiting at the far end cancels most of that saving.

Srinagar's transfer is short enough that a shared cab is a realistic option, which is not true of a nine-hour drive up the Alaknanda valley.

Our six-day course runs ₹22,499 to ₹76,999 across five hotel tiers, GST included, with gear, instruction, lift passes and the Phase 1 gondola in the price and three students per instructor.

There is a fuller breakdown of what a course fee covers, and the four costs most operators leave off the page, in our piece on what skiing in Gulmarg actually costs.

For a Delhi-based traveller watching the total, Auli generally works out lower. Worth saying plainly, because it is true, and because the arithmetic reverses the moment you are flying from Mumbai, Bengaluru or Kolkata.

05 The honest part

Where Auli genuinely wins

The short version

Auli is closer to Delhi, cheaper to reach, small enough to be kept in consistent condition, and free of the travel-advisory question some visitors face with Jammu and Kashmir. For a cautious first trip, those are real arguments rather than consolation prizes.

You can reach it without flying

Auli is roughly 490 km from Delhi by road, which makes it a long drive rather than an impossible one. Gulmarg is not a realistic road trip from anywhere outside the Kashmir Valley.

Matters if: you are travelling as a large group, splitting fuel rather than buying seats, or you would rather not fly at all.

There is no advisory question to work through

Several governments maintain travel advice covering Jammu and Kashmir, and the wording changes from time to time. Auli raises no such question at all, which for some travellers and some employers is the entire decision.

Worth reading: whether the region is safe and whether the mountain is safe are two separate questions. We have separated them in our honest answer on Gulmarg's safety.

A small mountain, kept in condition, with a graded main slope

Auli's ski area is about 3 km end to end, small enough to be worked as a single unit. Gulmarg's 25 km is largely left as it falls, which is exactly why it has the off-piste reputation it does. Auli's Nanda Devi slope also carries an FIS grading and hosts national championships.

Matters if: you are nervous. Predictable snow underfoot on day one is worth more to a beginner than any amount of terrain further up.

The view is on another level

Auli looks straight at Nanda Devi at 7,817 metres, with Kamet at 7,756 metres and Dunagiri at 7,066 metres alongside it, across slopes fringed with oak and deodar. Gulmarg's panorama is good. Auli's is extraordinary.

Matters if: someone in your group is not skiing. They will have a considerably better week sitting at Auli than sitting at Gulmarg.

A freshly groomed ski run curving between oak and deodar trees with distant Himalayan peaks behind
A worked run and a view. The two things Auli does better, in one frame.
To be clear

Every one of those is a reason to book Auli instead of us. We would rather you read it here than work it out afterwards.

06 The decision

Which one you should pick

The short version

Travelling in December or late March, or suspecting you might ski again: Gulmarg. Delhi-based, watching the budget, and able to travel between mid-January and mid-March: Auli. Almost everything else on this page is a preference rather than a decision.

The case for

Choose Gulmarg if

  • Your dates sit at the edges of the season — December, early January or late March — when Auli is still building cover or already losing its lower fields
  • You suspect this will not be your only ski trip, and you want somewhere to progress to
  • A nine-hour mountain drive with children in the car is a non-starter
  • Learning properly is the whole point, rather than seeing snow
The case for

Choose Auli if

  • You are flying from Delhi and the total cost is the deciding number
  • Your dates fall between mid-January and mid-March, the strongest part of Auli's published window
  • You would rather drive than fly, or you are moving as a large group
  • Someone travelling with you is not skiing and needs a good week regardless
Neither, yet

Wait if you only have three or four days

  • Skiing does not compress. Four to six days of coaching is what it takes to control speed, stop on command and link turns
  • A short trip at either destination buys you sore legs and a photograph, and the skill fades before you next stand on snow
  • There is a fuller answer in our piece on how many days it takes to learn to ski

Two things decide this, and neither of them is which mountain is better. The first is when you can travel. The second is whether you want to keep skiing after this trip.

If Gulmarg's reputation is what has been putting you off, that reputation belongs to the top of the mountain rather than the bottom. We have taken it apart separately in can a complete beginner learn to ski in Gulmarg.

Both of these are real ski destinations with real beginner terrain, and a first-timer can learn at either one. Pick the one that matches your calendar, and stop reading comparisons. Then check conditions close to your dates, because neither mountain has managed to promise a season since 2023.

07 Questions

Frequently asked

Is Auli easier for beginners than Gulmarg?

No. Both have beginner terrain that works, and the gradients are comparable. Auli's ski area is small enough to be kept in consistent condition, which genuinely helps on a first day. Gulmarg has far more terrain and lift capacity, and a season that opens about a month earlier.

Which one has more reliable snow?

Gulmarg, by roughly 930 metres of altitude and three and a half degrees of latitude. That is a margin rather than a guarantee. Gulmarg's beginner slopes were bare through January 2024 and the valley ran a snow deficit of roughly 80% in early 2025. Auli lost both of its scheduled February 2023 race events for want of snow, and its snow gun has never produced usable cover.

Is the Joshimath–Auli ropeway working?

It was suspended in January 2023 after land subsidence damaged the towers, and a replacement gondola worth around ₹480 crore has been proposed rather than a repair. Reports since have been inconsistent, so confirm the current position with the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam before you travel. Auli is reachable by road either way, on a 10 to 14 km climb from Jyotirmath.

Can I learn to ski in three days at either one?

Not properly. Four to six days of coaching is what it takes to control speed, stop on command and link turns. A three-day trip gets you standing up and sliding, which is a different thing, and the skill fades before you next stand on snow. There is a fuller answer in our piece on how many days it takes to learn to ski.
