Hampta Pass Trek 2026: Ex-Delhi vs. Ex-Manali & Daily Logistics

Lush green valleys on the Hampta Pass Trek from Delhi to Manali

The Hampta Pass is arguably the most dramatic crossover trek in the Indian Himalayas. Over the course of just a few days, you leave behind the lush, green alpine forests of the Kullu Valley and cross a high-altitude pass to enter the stark, barren, and breathtaking cold desert of Lahaul and Spiti.

Because this trail is so dynamic, logistics can be tricky. At Olixora, we have split our 2026 itineraries into two distinct options to make travel easier depending on where you are starting your journey. If you are ready to secure your spot, you can book the Hampta Pass Trek 2026 right now. But if you are still trying to decide which package fits your schedule and what the daily trail actually looks like, this guide breaks down the exact daily reality of the trek.

Ex-Delhi vs. Ex-Manali: Which Package Should You Choose?

The actual trekking experience on the mountain is identical for both options. The difference entirely comes down to your transit to the basecamp.

  • The Ex-Delhi Package: This is ideal if you are flying into the capital or live in the NCR region. We handle the 530 KM, 12 to 14-hour overnight journey from New Delhi to Manali via an AC Volvo bus or cab. You simply show up at the designated pickup point in Delhi, and we handle the rest.

  • The Ex-Manali Package: This is perfect if you are already exploring Himachal Pradesh or prefer to arrange your own transport. You will meet our trek leaders directly at the Manali basecamp, and your package begins from that point forward.

The Daily Reality: Distances, Terrain, and Campsites

To help you prepare physically and mentally, here is exactly what you will face on the trail once you leave Manali.

Jobra to Chika Campsite (10,100 ft)

After a short drive from Manali to the road-head at Jobra, your trek officially begins. This is an easy, acclimatization day. You will cover approximately 3 km in about 2 to 3 hours. The trail winds through mixed forests of pine, green maples, and birch trees before opening up to the beautiful green meadows of the Chika campsite, situated right next to a mountain stream.

Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (11,900 ft)

This is where the terrain starts to shift. You will trek for about 8.5 km, which takes roughly 6 hours. The route follows the Jwara River. You will experience river crossings and walk through valleys filled with wildflowers. “Balu Ka Ghera” translates to “mound of sand,” which perfectly describes this flat campsite surrounded by the majestic Dhauladhar ranges.

The Pass Crossing to Shea Goru (14,100 ft to 12,900 ft)

This is the most physically demanding day. It is a 12 km trek that will take up to 9 hours. You will begin a steep ascent to the Hampta Pass at 14,100 ft. Once at the top, the lush Kullu valley vanishes behind you, replaced by the arid, panoramic expanse of the Spiti valley, including stunning views of the Deo Tibba peak. The descent to the Shea Goru campsite is steep and can be slippery, requiring careful footing.

Shea Goru to Chatru and Chandratal Lake

You will tackle a 7 km descent (about 5 hours) to the Chatru road-head, navigating alongside the fast-flowing Chandra River. Once at Chatru, the trekking portion concludes. From here, we take a 48 km scenic drive over rugged mountain roads directly to the famous moon-shaped Chandratal Lake before heading to our final campsite.

Essential Gear You Cannot Forget

You will be moving through distinct micro-climates. To stay safe and comfortable, do not arrive at the basecamp without these mandatory items:

  • A 55-Liter Backpack: Must have a sturdy hip belt and a waterproof rain cover.

  • Proper Footwear: Ankle-supported trekking shoes are mandatory. Also, bring lightweight floaters or sandals to wear around the campsite to let your feet breathe.

  • Layered Clothing: Thermal innerwear, quick-dry trekking pants, fleece jackets, and a heavy waterproof/windproof outer shell or poncho.

  • Mandatory Documents: You must carry a physical Government Identity Card (both the original and a photocopy) for checkpoint clearances.

Trekkers are expected to carry their personal 55-liter backpacks. However, if you are unable to carry it due to altitude or fatigue, porter and mule services can be arranged at an additional personal cost (this is excluded from the primary trek fee).
